Used smithy in great shape. This is a super handy, well capable machine in the right hands. I have made some very cool parts and some pretty easy money with this little guy. Only selling for lack of space and I already have another lathe and mill. Had this for about 15 years. Has seen little use as we have other machines. Works as it should.

Don't have any experience with a Smithy or any other all-in-one machines but I have had milling cutters used in friction collets screw their way down into soft materials such as copper, brass, and aluminum. Solutions: 1. Use straight flute cutters, not helical flute. 2. Use mill holders with set screw and use milling cutters with a 'Weldon" shank.

Seconding this, though I haven't used one. Those look like they put on a bad mill on a reasonable lathe. Which is far better than compromising on both, or overpaying for a mediocre mill. When you outgrow the mill capabilities, you'll still have a useful lathe. I'm not so sure that's true with the combo machines.

The part where you have to know machinist type stuff I get lost, and I can't find too many mill/lathe conversions to go from. the smithy has a 12" swing, 20" bed & the cross slide has 8" travel. I plan to cut mainly aluminum, but a fair ammount of steel, so that needs to be accounted for.
